An in-depth tour of the Speyside and Highland regions of Scotland. Whisky and beer making are the main focus, with plenty of sightseeing, history and culture along the way.
After departing Edinburgh, you will escape the city and head north into the Kingdom of Fife. Here you will visit the independent Kingsbarns Distillery, one of the newest distilleries in Scotland.
Your tour now travels north east through St Andrews and Dundee before delving into the region of Angus. The next stop is the traditional market town of Blairgowrie . There is time to take a walk around and enjoy a local lunch before heading up and over the mountain pass of Glenshee into Royal Deeside. You will enjoy a special warehouse experience at Royal Lochnagar Distillery, followed by a tasting of some absolutely stunning whiskies.
Your journey now continues through the eastern Cairngorms via the The Lecht. This stunning drive follows one of the highest main roads in the UK towards Tomintoul, the self-proclaimed highest village in the Highlands of Scotland and home to the Whisky Castle. You descend to the banks of the mighty River Spey and into Grantown on Spey. Founded in 1766 by Sir James Grant, Grantown on Spey is your home for the next 3 nights.
Today’s tour starts with a back road drive along the the northern bank of the River Spey, followed by a visit to Glenfarclas Distillery. This is one of the last independent, family-owned distilleries in Scotland and we have arranged a very special tour and tasting for you to enjoy.
Next up, you return to the banks of the Spey for the short drive to the beautifully restored Knockando Woolmill. Not only is this a great stop to find out more about it’s historical importance, but also provides the chance for delicious home-baking and morning coffee.
Now your journey continues to Craigellachie and a visit to Thomas Telford’s famous bridge across the Spey, before continuing to the fascinating Speyside Cooperage. Here you will get an insight into the often-forgotten art of the cooper – the people responsible for the casks used by the distilleries.
You can then enjoy a delicious lunch in the restaurant at Glenfiddich Distillery (matched with a wee dram if you like) before heading to Aberlour Distillery where we have arranged a very special tasting to finish your first day exploring Speyside.
After a hearty breakfast it is a short drive to The Glenlivet Distillery to kick off your Saturday morning. The guides at Glenlivet will be taking you on a private tour before letting you sample some amazing distillery exclusives. There is time for coffee and a freshly baked scone before taking the scenic drive along the back roads to Glendronach Distillery. Despite the short drive, you will now be in the Highland Whisky region and, after a warm welcome and look around, three outstanding Highland drams await you.
Lunch in Huntly is followed by a visit to Strathisla Distilleryto see one of the oldest operating distilleries in the Highlands and one of the most picturesque too.
It is then back to Grantown on Spey for time to relax, have some dinner and get a good night’s sleep in anticipation of tomorrow.
A leisurely start to the day is followed by a visit to the tiny village ofCarrbridge and a chance to see the 298 year old packhorse bridge. Your guide will then drive you to Tomatin Distillery for a unique look behind the scenes and a phenomenal single cask nosing and tasting.
We will have lunch in Aviemore, the beating heart of the Cairngorm National Park, before a visit to the excellent Cairngorm Brewery for a look around and sampling of their craft beers.
You will now return south and say farewell to Speyside, continuing through Drumochter Pass towards the picturesque village of Dunkeld. Straddling the River Tay, this village boasts a cathedral, smokehouse, great pubs and an incredible history. With time to explore the town, walk by the river or simply relax in a beer garden this makes for the perfect last stop before crossing the Highland line and returning to the Lowlands and back to Edinburgh we we say farewell with fond memories and new friends.
